Before he could finish, Jiang Yichen cut him off, his expression suddenly grave. “Shut up. No one’s going to think you’re a mute for keeping your mouth shut.”
A sudden silence fell over the table. He Yan shot a wary glance at Shi Yu, who promptly rose from her seat, sensing the cue. “I’m just going to use the restroom.”
Shi Yu knew staying would only make things more awkward. But what she hadn't expected was that He Yan even knew about Li Mengxi—and seemed to know her well.
In other words, of all the women in Jiang Yichen’s life, she was the only one who had to be kept in the shadows. The one who wasn't fit to be seen, unworthy of being acknowledged…
She wanted the answer to He Yan’s question, too. Why had Jiang Yichen brought Li Mengxi to Huaren Hospital, the very place she worked? Was it a deliberate message? A warning for her to back off?
At that thought, a bitter smile touched her lips. He really didn't need to go to all this trouble. She was already planning her exit, and her mind was made up. He could save himself the effort.
She stood idly before the sinks, scrolling through her phone and deliberately taking her time. Suddenly, a cheerful figure bounded into her line of sight. “Ms. Shi!”
The little one’s voice boomed, nearly making her drop her phone. Recognizing Qin Yu, she reached out to pat the little girl’s head. “Xiao Yu, what are you doing here? Who did you come with?”
Qin Yu dodged her hand, pouting. “Don’t touch my hair! My brother did these braids, you’ll mess them up. I came with him. You want to see him, right? He said you two already know each other. Did you guys date?”
Shi Yu's mind reeled, utterly baffled. “You’re just a kid. What do you know about dating?”
Qin Yu puffed out her chest like a little grown-up. “Of course I know! Dating is when you hold hands, eat meals together, and give each other kisses, right?”
Shi Yu’s mouth twitched. Kids grew up so fast these days. “Weren’t you coming to use the restroom? You should go.”
The little girl finally disappeared into a stall.
She was out in a moment, standing on her tiptoes to wash her hands while sizing up Shi Yu. “You didn’t show up here just because you knew my brother was coming, did you?”
She mulled over the little girl's words. Had Qin Feng been through a bad breakup that left a mark on his sister? Was that why the child was so wary of her?
A headache began to form behind Shi Yu’s eyes. “Really, it’s not like that. You don’t have to be so on guard with me. If I’d wanted to be your sister-in-law, I would have been by now. I'm just here for dinner. If you’re okay, I'm going to head back out.”
She was telling the truth. If she had agreed to go out with Qin Feng back then, they might even be married by now.
Qin Yu looked like she had more questions, but Shi Yu was already walking out the door. Sure enough, Qin Feng was waiting right outside, clearly doting on his little sister and not leaving her side for a moment.
He started when he saw Shi Yu. “What a coincidence.”
Shi Yu offered him a small smile. “Yeah, I came here for dinner after finishing up at the hospital. I didn’t expect to see you here. I should get back.”
Qin Feng nodded as Qin Yu was already tugging unhappily at his sleeve. Shi Yu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, and simply quickened her pace back to her seat.
Catching sight of the smile still lingering on her lips, Jiang Yichen’s eyes darkened almost imperceptibly.
He Yan spoke up, his tone deliberately casual. “Shi Yu, I didn’t realize you knew the Qin family.”
Shi Yu explained honestly, “We were university classmates. We just know each other, that’s all. We weren’t particularly close.”
He Yan's tone turned strangely pointed. “Is that so? Because I seem to recall hearing that he pursued you.”
