"Find the best cardiothoracic surgeon you can for my father's bypass surgery. As soon as possible. Yes, that's all." Bo Hanshi was on the phone with his assistant, standing by the window, when a little girl suddenly toddled up to his leg. She stood there, staring up at him with wide, dewy eyes, her small lips pressed into a line.
A moment later, a bodyguard moved in from behind, intending to pull the little stranger away. The girl immediately clutched at Bo Hanshi’s trousers. "Mister, I’m not a bad person! Don’t let him take me!"
Bo Hanshi froze. Seeing she was just a child, and harmless at that, he gestured for the bodyguard to stand down.
"Can I help you?"
Xiaoxiangsi tilted her small, pale face up at him. "I don't need anything, Mister. You're really handsome! Can I talk with you for a bit?"
The little girl was a natural social butterfly. Even Bo Hanshi's cold expression didn't seem to faze her.
Bo Hanshi had no experience with children and was momentarily at a loss for words. "You're not afraid of me?"
Xiaoxiangsi shook her head, her innocence shining. "You're so handsome. Why would I be scared of you?"
"You're not afraid I'm a bad man?"
"You don't look like one," Xiaoxiangsi said with certainty.
Bo Hanshi was torn between amusement and exasperation. Do all little kids judge good and evil based on looks?
The two of them sat down on a bench in the hospital corridor. Xiaoxiangsi asked him curiously, "Mister, what are you doing at the hospital? Are you sick too?"
"I'm not. My father is." His adoptive father, Bo Feng, had been brought in for coronary heart disease. He was here to visit him.
Bo Hanshi wasn't sure why he was even talking to a little kid. Normally, he wouldn't give anyone the time of day. But there was something about this child that sparked an odd sense of warmth and familiarity in him. Perhaps it was because she was clever and well-behaved, and undeniably cute—not a spoiled brat like so many others.
The little girl let out a thoughtful "Oh," then added, "I'm sick too. Don't worry, Mister. Your daddy will get better."
A rare smile broke across Bo Hanshi's face, a genuine laugh escaping him. He was actually being comforted by a child.
"Mister, you look so good when you smile!"
The little girl's words were as sweet as honey, a barrage of compliments he found himself unable to refuse. The bodyguard standing nearby looked on, his jaw nearly on the floor. He had been with Mr. Bo for three years and had never once seen him willingly chat with a stranger who approached him. This kid... she really had some nerve.
He felt a strange connection to the child and couldn't help but ask, "Why are you out here by yourself? Where are your parents?"
"My mommy went to work. She has to earn money for my doctor visits. I've never met my daddy. Mommy says he got sick and passed away."
So, a single mother raising her child alone. Perhaps because Bo Hanshi himself came from a humble background, he felt a stir of compassion for her circumstances.
"Your name is Xiangsi?"
Xiaoxiangsi nodded, tilting her chin up proudly. "Uh-huh! My mommy gave it to me! Isn't my name pretty, Mister?"
Seeing her proud expression, a rare softness appeared in the man's usually cold, deep eyes. "Yes, it is."
"Mister, can you guess why my mommy named me Xiangsi?"
"It must come from that Wang Wei poem, *Lovesickness*? Is your mother fond of it?"
The little girl raised an eyebrow. "Only half right! Mommy said that when she had me all by herself, she missed Daddy so much that she named me Xiangsi."
"Has your father been gone for a long time?" The child looked to be five or six.
"Yup! I've never met him, and I'm already six."
A faint smile played on Bo Hanshi’s lips. "Then your mother... she's a very devoted woman." Few people could endure six years of loneliness, especially while raising a child on their own. The kid's mother must have gone through a lot.
"My mommy is super pretty, a real beauty! Some men like my mommy, but she only loves my daddy."
The child's innocent words didn't register the flicker of loss and darkness in Bo Hanshi's eyes. He suddenly envied this girl's father. Though he was gone, there was still someone in the world who loved him with her whole heart. That kind of unwavering loyalty was a rare treasure.
"Your parents must have loved each other very much."
Xiaoxiangsi comforted him with the gravity of a small adult. "Mister, you're so handsome. You'll find someone who loves you a lot, too."
Someone who loved him a lot? Perhaps there was once, or he had thought there was.
Bo Hanshi’s dark eyes narrowed, a self-mocking smile touching his thin lips. "I’m not so lucky when it comes to love. Not like your father."
"Mister, do you have a girlfriend?"
"No."
"You should give me your phone number!" Xiaoxiangsi said with all the enthusiasm of a matchmaker. "Since you're single and so pathetic, I'll introduce you to someone later! I know lots of pretty ladies!"
Pathetic? The bodyguard standing nearby was utterly bewildered. Mr. Bo was a billionaire. Women were constantly throwing themselves at him. How on earth could this kid possibly think he was *pathetic*? Besides, there was no way Mr. Bo would give his number to a stranger.
Of course, Bo Hanshi had no intention of giving it to her, but he didn't want to hurt her feelings. He offered a simple excuse: "You don't have a pen and paper. You wouldn't be able to remember it even if I told you."
To his surprise, the little girl just blinked and said, "Well, then you should tell me! Just say it once! I can remember it!"
