Terror sent Qin Anan stumbling back a few steps. He was like a beast roused from its slumber; dormant, he seemed harmless, but the moment his eyes opened, the danger poured out of him. Mrs. Zhang emerged from the room, pulling the door shut behind her. Seeing Qin Anan looking like a startled fawn, she offered some comfort. “Madam, don’t be afraid. Sir just woke up; he’s probably struggling to accept all this. You should sleep in the guest room tonight. Whatever it is, it can wait until morning. I can tell the old madam likes you. She might take your side.” Qin Anan’s mind was in turmoil. She had considered the possibility that Fu Siting might one day die, but never that he might wake up. “Mrs. Zhang, my things are still in his room…” Qin Anan glanced at the master bedroom, wanting to go in and retrieve all her belongings. From the savage, predatory look in his eyes just now, she had a sinking feeling that he would never accept her as his wife. She had to be ready to leave the Fu family at a moment’s notice. Mrs. Zhang let out a soft sigh. “If it’s nothing important, just leave it for now. I’ll get it for you in the morning.” Qin Anan nodded. “Are you… afraid of him too?” “I’ve been serving him for a long time,” Mrs. Zhang said. “He looks fierce, but he’s never given me any trouble.” Qin Anan murmured an acknowledgment and said no more. Though she was his wife, this was, in the strictest sense, their first time meeting. It was understandable that he would be hostile. That night, she slept poorly. A whirlwind of chaotic thoughts tore through her mind. Fu Siting’s awakening had completely shattered the rhythm of her life. ... The next day. At eight in the morning, Mrs. Zhang collected Qin Anan’s things from the master bedroom and brought them to the guest room. “Madam, it’s time for breakfast. Sir is already in the dining room. You should go too. Talk with him, get to know each other a little,” Mrs. Zhang suggested. Qin Anan’s expression soured. “I don’t think he wants to get to know me.” “You still have to eat,” Mrs. Zhang insisted. “Come on. I told him earlier how much the old madam likes you, and he didn’t get angry. Maybe he’ll be a little kinder to you today.” As Qin Anan approached the dining room, she saw him before she even got close. Fu Siting was sitting in a wheelchair. His hands could move, a testament to the physical therapy he must have been receiving. Though he was seated, his posture was ramrod straight. If he were to stand, he would surely be tall and lean. With a knot of anxiety in her stomach, she walked to the dining table and sat down. Mrs. Zhang brought her a bowl and chopsticks. He remained silent, even as she picked up her chopsticks. She couldn’t help but steal a glance at him. That single glance was all it took to draw his attention directly to her. His eyes were deep and boundless, like black holes that could swallow a person whole. “Um… I… My name is Qin Anan…” she began, her voice trembling. Fu Siting raised his coffee cup and took a leisurely sip. His voice was flat, devoid of emotion. “I hear you might be carrying my child.” A knot of tension tightened in Qin Anan’s chest, erasing her appetite completely. “Surgical or medical abortion. Which do you prefer?” he asked, his tone utterly calm as he uttered the cruelest of words. The color drained from Qin Anan’s face, her mind going blank. The topic was perhaps so horrifying that Mrs. Zhang forgot her place and spoke up. “Sir, the child was the old madam’s idea. It has nothing to do with Madam.” Fu Siting’s gaze slid to Mrs. Zhang. “Don’t use my mother against me.” Mrs. Zhang lowered her head and fell silent. “Fu Siting…” Qin Anan began. “Who gave you permission to use my name?” Qin Anan froze. “If I don’t call you by your name, what should I call you? Husband?” Fu Siting said nothing. She saw his lips thin into a hard line, fury beginning to smolder in his eyes. Before he could erupt, she rushed to extinguish the flames. “I’m not pregnant. I got my period. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Mrs. Wu from housekeeping. I borrowed a pad from her this morning.” Fu Siting didn’t say anything, but he lifted his coffee cup and took another sip. A pang of hunger shot through Qin Anan’s stomach. Deciding she couldn’t care less, she began to eat on her own. After hastily finishing her breakfast, she planned to go back to her room, grab her bag, and leave the house. Being under the same roof with him made her skin crawl. “Qin Anan, get your papers ready. We’ll be getting a divorce soon,” his voice, cold as ice, drifted over to her. Qin Anan stopped in her tracks, though she wasn’t particularly surprised. “Are we going right now?” “In a couple of days,” he said. The old Mrs. Fu had gotten overly excited the previous night and had been hospitalized for high blood pressure. Fu Siting wanted to wait until his mother’s condition stabilized and she was discharged before discussing the divorce. “Oh. Just let me know when,” she said, quickly walking back to her room. About five minutes later, she emerged with her bag in hand. To her surprise, she saw a familiar figure in the living room. Fu Yechen was here. He stood respectfully beside Fu Siting’s wheelchair, his tail tucked between his legs like a chastised grandchild. “Uncle, my parents went to the hospital to see Grandmother. My father asked me to come and check on you.” Fu Yechen placed the supplements he had brought on the coffee table. Fu Siting gave a subtle glance to the bodyguard at his side. The bodyguard understood immediately, picked up the gifts Fu Yechen had brought, and threw them out of the room. Fu Yechen panicked. “Uncle! I brought you the best supplements. If you don’t like them, I can get something else… Please don’t be angry!” As he finished speaking, another bodyguard stepped forward and kicked him squarely in the back of the knee, forcing him to the ground. Qin Anan held her breath, too terrified to even gasp. She had no idea what was happening, why Fu Siting would be so violent toward his own nephew. “My dear nephew,” Fu Siting said, a cigarette now appearing between his fingers. “You must be so disappointed that I woke up.” A bodyguard lit it for him with a lighter. The flicker of the flame stung her eyes. He had only woken up last night, and this morning he was already on coffee and cigarettes. Did he think he was invincible? Kneeling on the floor, Fu Yechen began to sob from the sharp pain in his knee. “Uncle, of course I’m happy you’re awake… I dreamed of you waking up…” “Are you questioning my intelligence?” Fu Siting’s brow arched. Each word was spoken with a casual air that barely concealed a murderous intent. “You had the guts to bribe my lawyer, but not the guts to admit it?” He deliberately flicked his cigarette ash onto Fu Yechen’s face. “Get out,” he said suddenly. “And don’t ever cross me again, or I’ll feed you to the dogs.” Fu Yechen broke down completely, scrambling out of the room. Qin Anan watched the scene unfold, her heart pounding in her chest. She was terrified. Terrified of Fu Siting. A despicable man like Fu Yechen was nothing more than a half-wit in front of him. She didn’t dare provoke him, nor did she want to draw his attention. Clutching her bag, she hurried out of the living room. She had a doctor’s appointment today for a check-up. Her period was late, and the flow was unusually light. It was the first time she had ever experienced something like this. At the hospital, she explained the situation to the doctor, who wrote her a request for an ultrasound. About an hour later, the scan was done, and she had the results. The ultrasound showed no signs of uterine bleeding. What it did show… was a gestational sac. She was pregnant.
