Off the coast of Country A, the isolated island of Feng Dao was little more than a slum. It was a dumping ground for the unwanted: the elderly who could no longer care for themselves, the severely disabled, the mentally ill. Anyone without support was cast off here, left to fend for themselves. No internet. No electricity. No supplies. No laws, no authority. It was hell on earth.
A perpetually gloomy sky shrouded the island like a black veil. Beneath a dying tree, a young girl sat huddled on the ground. Her threadbare, faded clothes hung on a fragile frame. Beneath a cascade of long hair, her small face was shockingly pale, flecked with blood. Chu Mian chewed on her nail, her dark, clear eyes staring ahead with a calm, vacant indifference.
Some ran about naked; others leaped into the sea, trying to escape; still others, unable to bear it, would quietly sharpen a rock and slit their wrists. Scenes like these had become commonplace since the Chu family had thrown her here three years ago.
She was the Chu family's adopted daughter. Only three years ago had she learned the truth: the Chus had taken her in because of a fortune teller's prophecy. Their true daughter, Chu Xing, was fated to have a difficult life, plagued by illness as a child and destined for a violent death abroad after her eighteenth birthday. The only way for Chu Xing to escape this fate was for someone with an identical birth chart to bear the injustice in her stead.
Chu Mian was that substitute.
As a child, the Chus had fed her all sorts of strange concoctions to keep her constantly ill. On her eighteenth birthday, they tried to force her into an engagement with an old man nearly sixty. She had fought back, stabbing the man with a fruit knife. Her escape attempt failed, and in the end, the Chu family sent her to Feng Dao.
And just like that, three years had passed.
Chu Mian had no idea when she would finally fulfill the Chu family's wish and die a violent death far from home.
"Thump-thump-thump-thump."
A rhythmic chopping sound suddenly split the air—the sound of helicopters. Chu Mian looked up. Dozens of them were circling the island, their rotor blades creating a deafening roar that seemed to tear at the eardrums. The sheer scale of it was overwhelming.
What was happening?
The helicopters landed near the shore. A crowd of the mentally disturbed, drawn by the novelty, swarmed them, surrounding the aircraft and trying to climb aboard, like a scene from a zombie siege.
"Bang."
"Bang."
"Bang."
A few deafening gunshots echoed through the air. Birds and beasts scattered from the withered forest. One by one, the people fell, huge, bloody holes torn through their foreheads.
Someone screamed.
In the distance, she could see them: a group of men in sharp suits, each one holding a gun.
Chu Mian shrank back, her lips pressing into a thin line. Had the government finally decided to exterminate them all? Was she about to die?
If so, what was the point of her existence? Was it truly just to be a shield for Chu Xing?
She refused to accept it. She absolutely refused. She had to survive. She would have her revenge!
"Mr. Li, this area is far from the central shantytown. It's mostly the mentally ill here, driven out to the coast by the more lucid ones. The annual death rate is as high as fifty percent."
Two columns of armed men advanced into a grove of withered trees. Chu Mian sat frozen beneath her tree, the barrel of a rifle pointed in her direction.
It was as if she were the next soul to be claimed.
Her gaze lowered, she saw a pair of gleaming, pointed leather shoes crunching over the dead leaves as they passed in front of her. Suddenly, the crunching stopped. The shoes turned, pivoting toward her.
Their owner was now facing her directly. A heavy gaze fell upon her.
An overwhelming, suffocating pressure descended on Chu Mian, stealing the air from her lungs.
"Is she one of the mentally ill?"
The man's voice—deep, cool, and laced with an innate, condescending authority—pierced through her like a bullet. A chill shot from the crown of her head and spread through her entire body.
