"She's going to be your sister-in-law. Show her some respect."
"..."
Sister-in-law?! Was her brother blind? How could he fall for such a phony!
Lu Wanzhi was about to urge her brother to calm down, but when she glanced up, she realized his attention wasn't on her at all. Following his gaze out the car window, she saw Qin Siyan a short distance away, staring at the young maid from before with an unmistakable look of affection.
Tsk. For her notorious playboy cousin to be so fixated on a maid... something was definitely up.
But her brother... She thought back to what had just happened at the Mu residence. He had barely said a word the entire time, but by the end, his anger was palpable. Others might not have noticed, but she knew him well enough to understand. He was furious about the Mu family’s aggressive attitude toward the young maid.
A mischievous glint appeared in her eyes. "Brother," she teased, "are you interested in that maid from the Mu family? If you're worried about them firing her, we could always just hire her ourselves."
The man's lips curved into a faint smile, his eyes deep and unreadable. "That's not impossible."
"Huh?" Lu Wanzhi leaned forward abruptly. "Brother, are you serious?"
She had only been teasing, but he was actually considering it?
Lu Wanzhi swallowed hard, her gaze fixing on the woman outside the window. She needed to get a better look, to figure out what on earth was so special about this woman that had both her brother and her cousin taking such notice.
Meanwhile, Qin Siyan had dragged Wen Xi out of the Mu family's villa.
Frowning, she had to use all her strength to finally wrench her wrist from his grasp. "Qin Siyan, let go of me."
Qin Siyan stopped, his face still tight with anger. "After the way the Mu family treated you, why are you still here?" he demanded, bewildered. "You can find work as a maid anywhere. Why insist on staying here just to be humiliated?"
Wen Xi pressed her lips into a thin, tight line. Her face, already ashen from the pain, seemed to lose even more color.
Realizing he’d said the wrong thing, Qin Siyan's tone softened. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sound like I was looking down on you. What I meant was... I can help you find another job. You..."
"Qin Siyan." A bitter smile touched Wen Xi's lips. "I'm fine here. Thank you for bringing me back today, but I have work to do. You should go."
With that, Wen Xi turned and walked back into the Mu family's villa.
Qin Siyan had been appearing by her side frequently of late. It wasn't that she was oblivious to his interest, but she knew, with absolute clarity, that regardless of her own feelings, the chasm between their social statuses was simply insurmountable.
Just as Qin Siyan started to go after her, the jarring blare of a car horn cut through the air.
He glanced over instinctively. In the driver's seat of a black Bentley, Lu Qinghan stared at him, his expression cold and his eyes holding an unmistakable warning...
