First Chapter
A million dollars?!
Where did her husband get that kind of money?
Su Xiaohui had never imagined that a whim to clean the mattress today would lead her to discover the withdrawal slip hidden beneath it.
As her eyes fell on the slip—the withdrawal amount printed clearly alongside her husband Zhou Sen’s name—shock washed over her face.
She was an attending physician in the obstetrics and gynecology department of a top-tier hospital, while her husband, Zhou Sen, was a lecturer at a third-rate university. Their combined annual income didn't even reach five hundred thousand dollars, and that was before factoring in their massive mortgage, daily living costs, their child’s education, and supporting their aging parents on both sides.
After six years of marriage, their total savings barely amounted to three hundred thousand dollars; they couldn't even dream of getting a new car.
Her first reaction was that it had to be a mistake. It must belong to someone else with the same name as Zhou Sen.
But that couldn’t be right.
If it were really a mistake, why would her husband hide it under the mattress?
And another thing—she didn't remember them ever opening an account with this bank. How could they have a withdrawal slip from it?
Suppressing the unease churning in her stomach, Su Xiaohui pulled out her phone. She took a photo of the slip, intending to send it to her husband, but her thumb hovered over the 'send' button. She hesitated.
Her best friend worked at a bank. She decided to verify the slip’s authenticity first—and confirm if the bank card was really her husband's.
In the end, she made the call.
Her friend agreed immediately but explained that it would take some time to look into it, so she wouldn't have an answer right away.
Soon, it was time for school to let out. The sound of her husband and daughter's cheerful banter announced their return.
The moment she saw Su Xiaohui, their daughter, Zhou Le, ran and threw herself into her arms.
“Mommy, Daddy lied to me! Daddy’s a big meanie!”
Normally, Su Xiaohui would have laughed and asked what had happened.
But with the bank slip weighing on her mind, her mood was complicated. She looked at Zhou Sen, a ghost of a smile playing on her lips.
“What did you lie to her about?”
Before Zhou Sen could even speak, the little girl blurted out, “Daddy promised to buy me fried chicken wings if I was good, and my teacher praised me today, but he still wouldn't buy them!”
“It's not that I won't buy them,” Zhou Sen said, “it's just that Daddy has no money, right? Your mom knows Daddy's broke.”
“All the money's with Mommy. Go on, ask her.”
He shot Su Xiaohui a conspiratorial wink. It was their usual routine—teaming up to trick their daughter out of eating junk food.
This time, however, Su Xiaohui didn't play along as she usually did. Instead, she said:
“Who knows if you've got your own stash of cash hidden somewhere?”
Zhou Sen froze for a second, then gave a helpless, amused laugh.
“Honey, what secret stash?”
“Don't you have my salary card? You know every penny I make and spend.”
Zhou Sen’s expression was open, his gaze steady as he looked at Su Xiaohui. There wasn't a hint of discomfort in his eyes.
Su Xiaohui studied him for a moment before replying:
“I wouldn't be so sure. The salary card is with me, yes. But who's to say that's the only card you have?”
“Honey, why would you even think that?”
Zhou Sen looked genuinely surprised.
“Is there a single bank card of mine you don't know about? Besides, even if I had other cards, where would I get extra income?”
“You know as well as I do, we’re on fixed salaries. It's not like anyone's hiring me for private tutoring or anything.”
“If I could earn more, you wouldn't have to work so hard, performing so many surgeries every day.”
As he spoke, a flicker of genuine pain for her crossed his eyes.
Seeing him like this, Su Xiaohui began to think she was just being paranoid.
They had been together since high school and married right after college; they knew each other inside and out.
Her husband was the kind of man who, if he only had a hundred dollars to his name, would spend all of it on her. How could he possibly hide money from her, let alone such a staggering amount?
At that thought, her expression softened. She opened her mouth to speak. “Today, I was…”
She was just about to speak when her phone suddenly rang. She glanced down. It was her best friend.
