She would get to the bottom of the money issue with her husband and Zhang Qiu.
Seeing the determination on her face, Wen Zhao didn't press the issue. As he was leaving, he just said,
“You can still call me if you have any problems.”
“My offer still stands. I lost the bet, so the investigation into your husband is on me—I won't charge you a dime.”
With that, he left before Su Xiaohui could say another word.
The moment Wen Zhao was gone, Su Xiaohui couldn't sit still. She quickly gathered her things and drove straight to Zhang Qiu's house.
Zhang Qiu's face was a mask of surprise when she saw Su Xiaohui show up at her door that evening.
“Xiaohui, what are you doing here? Don't you have the kids tonight?”
Usually, Su Xiaohui was either on duty or at home with her children; they rarely met up in the evenings.
“Zhang Qiu, I need to talk to you about something.”
Seeing the grave look on her face, Zhang Qiu’s eyes flickered.
“Alright. Wait here. I’ll just tell Lao Zhao to get the kids to bed.”
She disappeared inside to speak with her husband, re-emerging moments later with a jacket on.
“Come on, let's go find somewhere to talk.”
They settled into a booth at a nearby dessert shop. Zhang Qiu broke the silence.
“What's wrong? Did something happen? You're making me really nervous.”
“Qiuqiu, we've known each other for years. I just need a straight answer from you today—are you hiding something from me?”
Zhang Qiu's face fell at her words. Her gaze shifted, unable to meet Su Xiaohui's eyes.
“What could I possibly be hiding from you? Did something happen?”
“Zhang Qiu! I know everything. How long are you going to keep lying to me?”
Su Xiaohui demanded, her voice thick with anger.
“That one-million-dollar withdrawal slip was real, wasn't it?”
“And the fifteen million in his account—that's real too, right?”
“I know it all, so when were you planning on stopping the lies?”
“Zhang Qiu, you're my best friend. You're like a sister to me. Why would you hide this from me with him? What do you take me for?”
At this, Zhang Qiu finally broke, her composure crumbling. “Xiaohui, listen to me,” she said frantically. “It's not what you think.”
“Oh, I don't even know where to begin.”
“Then start from the beginning,” Su Xiaohui’s voice was cold. “I've got all the time in the world today.”
Her face was still a mask of fury.
A small part of her was relieved to know her best friend wasn't sleeping with her husband, but the realization that they had conspired to deceive her was still a bitter pill to swallow.
Seeing there was no way out, Zhang Qiu finally confessed.
“Here's what happened. A few months ago, your Zhou suddenly called me. He wanted to deposit a sum of money at our bank and asked if I could get him the best possible interest rate on a certificate of deposit.”
“At first, I thought it was just a little of his personal savings, but then he told me it was over ten million.”
“I was floored. I asked him where he got so much money, but he wouldn't say. He just said he wanted to leave it in the bank for a while to earn some extra interest.”
“And he asked me not to tell you about it.”
At this, Su Xiaohui couldn't help but cut in. “So you just… didn't tell me?”
Zhang Qiu rushed to explain. “Of course I said no at first!”
“But your Zhou kept insisting. He said you work so hard, day and night, even volunteering for night shifts just so the family could be more comfortable. He said it broke his heart to see you like that.”
“He wanted you to be able to relax, to not worry about money so much.”
“He said you're so frugal you won't even buy yourself a decent handbag, and he just wanted to earn a little extra to buy you things you'd like.”
“When he put it like that, how could I refuse?”
“Honestly, Xiaohui, your Zhou… he's really one of a kind,” Zhang Qiu said with a sigh of genuine admiration.
Su Xiaohui's heart skipped a beat. She had never imagined this could be the truth.
