Chapter 6: Staying in my favor

Gu Beichen was stunned. "Sixteen?" In their circle, Chi Jiao’s reputation wasn't built on her beauty alone. It was her academic brilliance—top grades since childhood and a degree from a prestigious university—that truly set her apart. You couldn't find a more accomplished woman in all of Haicheng's high society. She was a worthy match for Huo Sihan. Beauty alone was a dead end for any woman, but beauty paired with a top-tier education? That was the ultimate trump card. The higher you climbed in society, the more they valued a woman's mind. Whatever faint positive impression Gu Beichen had of Chi Wan vanished. His voice dripped with disdain. "Chi Wan, did you really drop out of school at sixteen?" Chi Wan glanced at the proud Chi Jiao, a calm smile playing on her lips. "That's right. I stopped school at sixteen." "What a coincidence," Gu Beichen scoffed. "My brother also stopped school at sixteen. Of course, he's a true prodigy—he earned dual master's degrees from Harvard at sixteen, a history-making achievement. You, on the other hand, probably don't even have a high school diploma, ha!" Gu Beichen's laughter was loud. Chi Jiao simply looked on, an air of superiority about her. They both clearly looked down on Chi Wan. Huo Sihan, tall and imposing, stood still as the corridor lights gilded his handsome, cold face. He turned his gaze to Chi Wan. For the past three years, Chi Wan had been a housewife, her world revolving around him. So it was no surprise she didn't have a degree. But Chi Wan showed no trace of embarrassment or fear. Instead, her clear, luminous eyes met his. A graceful smile danced across her lips as she said, "Yes, it really is quite a coincidence." *Yes, it really is quite a coincidence.* For reasons he couldn't explain, Huo Sihan felt a stir in his chest. He realized then that her eyes were truly beautiful, full of a life and intelligence that seemed to hold a conversation all on their own. "Wanwan!" a voice called out. Su Xiaofu ran over, her eyes flashing with anger when she saw Chi Jiao. "Chi Jiao, are you bullying Wanwan again?" "We're not bullying her," Chi Jiao said proudly. "We were just thinking of finding her a job." Su Xiaofu was incredulous. "You're finding Wanwan a job?" Chi Jiao continued with magnanimous condescension, "That's right. Even though Chi Wan has no diploma and no degree, we'll do our best to find her a good position." Su Xiaofu was speechless. She finally let out a laugh that was pure anger. "Do you have any idea who Wanwan is? She's..." Chi Wan quickly grabbed Su Xiaofu's arm, stopping her. "Xiaofu, let's go." Su Xiaofu fell silent, but not before shooting Chi Jiao a look one might reserve for a clown. "You'll be eating your words one day!" With that, Su Xiaofu led Chi Wan away. Gu Beichen fumed, "What's her problem? Someone who dropped out at sixteen has the nerve to be so arrogant? If I were her, I'd be too ashamed to show my face in public." Chi Jiao remained unbothered. She had never considered Chi Wan a worthy opponent. Getting angry at her would only lower her own standing. Smiling at Gu Beichen, Chi Jiao said, "Beichen, just let it go. Ignorance is bliss." Gu Beichen turned to Huo Sihan. "Brother, you need to divorce her. She doesn't deserve you." Huo Sihan’s handsome face remained an unreadable mask. He looked at Chi Jiao and said, "Let's go." "Okay," Chi Jiao nodded. She and Gu Beichen followed Huo Sihan out. ………… As they stepped out of the bar, a voice called out, "Mr. Huo?!" Huo Sihan looked up and recognized the man. It was President Sai of Harvard University. Huo Sihan walked over. "President Sai, what brings you to Haicheng?" Chi Jiao was deeply respectful of President Sai. Despite her own academic achievements, she had never been able to earn a place at a top-tier institution like Harvard. President Sai smiled. "Mr. Huo, I'm here for a symposium. What a coincidence, your junior is in Haicheng as well." Huo Sihan paused. "My junior?" "That's right. Harvard has two legends. The first is you, Huo Sihan. The second is this junior of yours. Like you, she earned her dual degrees at sixteen. A true girl genius. It's a shame you were a few years apart, so you never met her." Gu Beichen's curiosity was piqued. "Wow, is this junior of my brother's really that amazing? Who's smarter, her or my brother?" President Sai smiled and looked at Huo Sihan, offering his assessment. "They're on par with each other." Huo Sihan raised a brow. He had never met a woman who was his equal. This was the first time Chi Jiao had ever heard of Huo Sihan having a genius junior who was his match. She felt no rivalry with Chi Wan, but the mention of this girl genius instantly rattled her. Who was this junior? A deep sense of hostility and jealousy began to brew within Chi Jiao. President Sai took out his phone. "Mr. Huo, I've sent you her WeChat contact. Add her when you have a moment. Since she's also in Haicheng, you, as her senior, should look out for her." "I will," Huo Sihan nodded. After President Sai left, Gu Beichen urged, "Brother, hurry up and add her on WeChat! I want to see what she looks like." Huo Sihan pulled out his phone and opened the profile. The WeChat name was a single English letter: W. The background was a blank white. "What does 'W' stand for?" Gu Beichen wondered. Huo Sihan didn't know either. He sent a friend request with the note: "Huo Sihan." The request was pending. Gu Beichen was buzzing with excitement. "Brother, once she accepts, you have to share her contact with me. I'm already her biggest fan." Chi Jiao was already annoyed that all their attention had shifted to this mysterious junior. Just then, a Rolls-Royce sedan pulled up to the curb—Huo Sihan's personal secretary, Zhao Qing, had arrived. Chi Jiao quickly cut the conversation short. "Sihan, the car is here. Let's get in." "See you, Brother, Jiao Jiao," Gu Beichen waved. ………… The Rolls-Royce glided smoothly down the road. Inside the quiet, luxurious cabin, Secretary Zhao glanced at the rearview mirror and respectfully asked Huo Sihan in the back seat, "Sir, where are we headed?" "To the office," Huo Sihan replied. Chi Jiao gazed at Huo Sihan. The neon lights of the city streamed through the pristine windows, casting his handsome face in shifting patterns of light and shadow, like a scene from a classic black-and-white film—noble and mysterious. Love filled her eyes. "Sihan, what was that about with Chi Wan earlier? Don't tell me you're thinking of... starting something with her, now that she's gotten prettier?" Huo Sihan glanced at her, his voice casual, tinged with indolence. "She's my wife. It would be perfectly normal. Besides, weren't you the one who pushed her on me?" Chi Jiao knew he was still holding a grudge. He resented her for abandoning him three years ago when he was in a coma, for running off abroad and letting Chi Wan marry him in her place. She tried to defend herself. "Sihan, it was Chi Wan who insisted on marrying you! I had no choice but to let her have you..." "Do you even believe that yourself?" Huo Sihan cut in. Chi Jiao was speechless. She bit her red lip and said petulantly, "Fine, I abandoned you three years ago. If you can't get over it, then let's just break up. You don't have to be with me." Turning to the driver, she commanded, "Secretary Zhao, stop the car!" She tried to get out. But Huo Sihan's long, well-defined fingers shot out and grabbed her slender wrist. With a firm tug, he pulled her off balance, and her soft body collided with his firm chest. His voice from above was a mixture of exasperation and indulgence. "Chi Jiao, you only act this way because you know how much I spoil you."
