The room fell into a deathly silence for a second.
Immediately followed by another heavy slap.
"Hah? You're Mrs. Sterling? Then who am I? The Queen of England?"
"I've worked at the Sterling Group for seven years and never heard that the boss was married!"
"Lying even when death is at your door?"
My mouth tasted of blood as I feebly defended myself, "We kept our marriage secret... please..."
Hearing Arthur's name, the assistants pinning me down wavered slightly, the force of their hands loosening.
Chloe, however, spat with disdain. "Don't listen to her nonsense. If the boss were married, how could the media not know?"
She contemptuously kicked my torn cashmere sweater.
"Look at this poverty-stricken look. Her whole outfit isn't worth two hundred dollars. Would Mrs. Sterling wear this kind of bargain-bin trash?"
I closed my eyes in despair. For the comfort of the pregnancy, I had specifically worn the softest cotton clothes, wore no jewelry, and had even taken off my wedding ring and left it at home because my fingers were swollen.
Just then, I felt a warm liquid flowing down my thighs.
A panic like never before seized my heart.
"Blood! She's bleeding!"
The female assistant holding my legs jumped away in terror, her hands stained crimson.
My heart seemed to skip a beat; the world collapsed in that instant.
My trembling hand reached down, touching a sticky warmth.
Chloe glanced at it and scolded coldly, "What are you screaming for? It's just a miscarriage, isn't it?"
"It was just a bastard meant to blackmail the boss anyway. It's good that it's gone; saves trouble later."
The surrounding crowd was deathly silent. No one dared to speak up at this moment, let alone step forward to help me.
I clutched my belly, tears mixing with blood, and begged, "Ambulance... please, call an ambulance..."
"My baby... save my baby..."
But everyone chose silence under Chloe's tyranny. They watched me struggle in a pool of blood like a dying fish.
Chloe even watched with amusement for a while, until the bloodstain on the floor spread.
Finally, she picked up the internal phone.
I thought she had finally found a conscience and was calling a doctor, but I heard her dial the direct line to the top floor.
"What is it?" Arthur's low, indifferent voice came from the other end.
"Mr. Sterling, sorry to disturb you. A crazy woman broke in downstairs, claiming to be pregnant with your child, and refuses to leave."
Chloe's voice instantly became sweet and delicate, a stark contrast to the demon she had been moments ago.
Arthur seemed to be busy, his tone impatient. "You're reporting this kind of trivial matter to me? What is Security doing? Handle it yourself. Don't let her dirty the company's premises."
With that, the call was hung up.
Chloe raised her eyebrows triumphantly. "Did you hear that? The boss gave me full authority to handle it."
I wanted to shout Arthur's name, but I was so weak I could only produce a gasp.
Chloe walked up to me in her high heels.
She ground the tip of her shoe into my fingers, her face wearing a look of cruel pleasure. "Seeing you bleed this much, I won't take nude photos. Wouldn't want to scare the netizens."
"However, since the boss said not to dirty the place, leaving you with that face would still be a nuisance."
"I'd like to see how you'll seduce men after you're disfigured."
Saying this, she continued to toy with the letter opener, the blade glinting coldly under the lights.
Just as I fell into utter despair, Chloe's phone suddenly rang.
It was Arthur calling back.
Chloe immediately put on a respectful tone and answered the phone.
"Get the contracts for the 'Aurora Project' ready. Immediately."
"Yes, Mr. Sterling."
"I'm coming down in five minutes. I need the car..."
