Just as the sedan was about to hit Rong Jin, someone darted out from the side and yanked her back.
The car grazed past them, vanishing down the street.
“Miss Rong, dying over a man isn't worth it.” The man who had saved her was the driver, Asheng. “If you were gone, who would take care of your grandmother?”
The words snapped the dazed Rong Jin back to her senses. He was right. If she were gone, what would happen to her grandmother?
A car pulled up moments later, and Asheng opened the rear door for her. “My boss would like to see you. He can give you everything you need.”
“He can give me what I want, but what could I possibly give him?” Rong Jin let out a bitter laugh.
She wasn't a fool. She knew the man who had taken her innocence wouldn't help her without wanting something in return.
Her reputation was in tatters, and she had nothing left.
Rong Jin wrapped her arms around herself and said in a low voice, “Thank you for saving me, and please thank your boss for me. But I don't want to lose the last bit of dignity I have left.”
Seeing her like this, Asheng didn't press the issue. He held out a business card between two fingers. “Miss Rong, this is my number. You can call me if you need anything.”
“Alright.” Rong Jin took the card absently and turned to leave.
Shortly after, Asheng returned to Yanyuan. He reported Rong Jin's words to Fu Xiaoquan verbatim, adding, “Sir, that car was targeting Miss Rong.”
Fu Xiaoquan’s eyes darkened. “Look into it. And have someone watch her from a distance, just to ensure her safety.”
That woman’s dignity, he thought, needed to be worn down a bit.
…
Rong Jin went to the hospital.
Her grandmother had been bedridden for days after her heart had stopped, but she was finally off the ventilator.
Though she couldn't get out of bed, her spirits were much improved.
“Grandma.” Rong Jin forced a smile as she walked into the room. “How are you feeling?”
“Much better.” Her grandmother took one look at Rong Jin’s face and knew she’d been crying. Her brow furrowed. “You went to see Song Shi, didn’t you? Did he hurt you?”
Rong Jin shook her head and took her grandmother's hand. “No, I was just so worried about you. Grandma, you have to get better.”
Perhaps Rong Jin’s performance was convincing enough, because her grandmother didn't press further. “Jin, find the right time and divorce Song Shi. That man is a wolf. If he was willing to steal the company, he won't show you any mercy!”
“I will…”
Her grandmother still had no idea that Song Shi had already tricked her out of everything, or that she now knew the truth about her parents’ deaths…
Over the next few days, Rong Jin stayed by her grandmother’s side at the hospital. She managed to disable the television in the room and instructed the nursing staff not to bring in any newspapers, all to keep her grandmother from seeing the news.
Watching her grandmother slowly recover, Rong Jin began to smile again, to feel like she was still alive.
Then one day, she received a call from their maid. “Miss, there are a lot of people here, they’re moving things all over the place…”
The line went dead before the maid could finish.
Rong Jin hailed a cab and rushed to the Nanshan villa. The place was in chaos, with several men packing up expensive antiques and paintings.
Upstairs, men were rummaging for valuables, and to make things easier, they were simply tossing anything they deemed worthless over the railing to the floor below.
Suddenly, two wooden memorial tablets were thrown down.
Rong Jin lunged for them, but she was a step too late. The tablets cracked from the impact.
She cradled them in her arms, her eyes turning red.
Rong Jin looked up at the worker, her eyes blazing with a venomous glare. “Aren’t you afraid of the consequences of desecrating a family's shrine?!”
“The employer said we could do whatever we wanted with the junk,” the worker stammered, frightened by her expression, and quickly hurried away.
“Dad, Mom, I’m so sorry…” Rong Jin wiped the dirt from the tablets, tears dripping onto the wood, her jaw trembling uncontrollably.
*Song Shi, you are truly cruel. First you kill my parents, and now you won't even let their spirits rest in peace!*
