Chapter 14: Waiting Patiently

I’ve always held onto one conviction: I could have even accepted Deng Jiazhe's infidelity. What I can't understand, what I will never accept, is why he would try to kill me. Without his orders, Zhao Mingzhen would never have found the courage to drive that needle into my skull. The thought made me want to tear that venomous bitch Zhao Mingzhen to pieces. *Don't worry,* I vowed to myself, *I'll make them pay for this a thousand times over.* "Then tell me what I need to do. Danni, don't you worry," Zhou Haizhen’s voice was fierce, brimming with the spirit of a warrior. "I’d lay down my life to help you get justice for this!" She pressed on, "Look, if we're going to investigate, we have to go all the way. And your company... God knows what’s happening with it. Danni, do we look into it?" "Yes, investigate everything." My voice was low but firm, acutely aware of my situation. "Right now, the only way I can bring down Deng Jiazhe is with irrefutable proof. Otherwise, I’m the one who’s going to end up dead." Then a thought struck me. "By the way, how did you get that repairman in here? Can we trust him?" "He’s reliable, don't worry about it," she reassured me. "I was getting desperate because I couldn't get to you. I had to find another way. When I was leaving, I saw some electricians in the neighborhood doing repairs from yesterday's power outage. I just paid one of them to go in." I took a moment to steady my nerves, then laid out all my suspicions and ideas for Zhou Haizhen. She nodded solemnly. "Leave it to me. But you have to promise to keep yourself safe. Message me the second you think of anything, and if you feel you're in danger, call me or the police immediately." She grilled me on a few more details, her anxiety palpable even over the phone, before finally hanging up. I let out a long breath, forcing my racing heart to slow. It struck me as odd that I hadn't seen Deng Jiazhe for two days. Was he on a business trip? A deep-seated instinct told me things were far more complicated than they appeared. I refused to believe that Deng Jiazhe would do something so inhuman to me just because of a nanny. His words—‘Keep an eye on her! Hasn’t her condition been a little off these past two days?’—echoed in my mind, and I knew they held a meaning far more sinister than their surface suggested. And he never used to lock anything in his study. That change in habit meant he was hiding a much bigger secret. It was time to check all the security cameras in the house. People may scheme, but the cameras see all. And now, I could use them to watch my watchers. But to access the old footage, I’d have to get into his computer and view the original recordings. How was I going to manage that? I sent another message to Zhou Haizhen, and she told me to wait patiently. I managed a light nap, careful not to fall too deeply asleep, my senses on high alert for any sound from outside my room. After I awoke, truly lucid for the first time in days, a cascade of horrifying realizations washed over me. First, I realized my body was unnervingly weak. My heart felt strained, struggling with every beat, and I suspected something was seriously wrong with it. My calves were badly swollen, and my face was puffy. I had a constant, pressing need to urinate but could barely pass anything—all symptoms, I feared, of kidney failure. Staring at my bloated, puffy-faced reflection in the mirror, a wave of retroactive terror chilled me to the bone. If my little cat, Ruiwa, hadn't been so greedy, I would have died without ever knowing why. The only small mercy was that after just three days off the medication, my hair loss had noticeably slowed, and the pangs of hunger were growing stronger. To keep Zhao Mingzhen from suspecting anything, the clumps of fallen hair I had previously saved came into play. I made a point of letting her see me gathering loose strands from my pillow, reinforcing the illusion. Whenever she lingered in my room for too long, I would make a show of touching the spot where she had stabbed me, murmuring about the pain. Guilt would flash across her face, and she would quickly retreat. Later that afternoon, the same electrician showed up again. Zhao Mingzhen seemed suspicious, trailing behind him and demanding, "What else is there to check?" I knew instantly that Zhou Haizhen had sent him back to retrieve the doctored medicine, but with Zhao Mingzhen shadowing his every move, there was no opportunity for me to pass it to him. Trapped in my role as the "drowsy" patient, I didn't dare make a single move.
