Chapter 4: Even adults can't lie

Duoduo threw herself into Li Mi’s arms, frightened. “Mommy, are you okay? Did he hurt you?” “No, no.” Li Mi quickly wiped away her daughter’s tears, forcing a bright smile. “Mommy’s fine.” But inside, her heart was hammering. Jing Ting’s suspicious gaze scanned the two children and this woman, his brows drawing together in a severe line. The fury in his eyes made Li Mi’s heart seize. Duoduo, her own eyes brimming with tears, glared at Jing Ting. “You’re a mean daddy! I don’t want you anymore! You hit Mommy! Waaaah… You’re a bully!” She seemed completely unfazed by his intimidating presence. A sense of dread washed over Li Mi. “Stop calling him Daddy! He is not your father!” “Just because you say so?” Zhanzhan wasn’t ready to give up. “Are you scared to get a paternity test?” Exasperated, Li Mi was at her wit's end. “Zhanzhan!” “Mommy, you handled the first seven years on your own. It’s time he handled the next seven.” Zhanzhan’s logic was surprisingly clear. He had already accepted this man as his father. The tension in Jing Ting’s face eased slightly. He pressed his lips into a thin line, a complex emotion flickering in his deep-set eyes. Time seemed to stand still. “The third rule of the Li family: kids aren't allowed to lie! And that means grown-ups, too!” Zhanzhan looked up and asked, “Mommy, is he our daddy or not?” The defenses Li Mi had built around her heart crumbled in that instant. Meeting Jing Ting’s complex, icy gaze, she froze, feeling something inside her silently shatter. “...” She didn’t know how to answer him. Jing Ting’s well-defined brows knitted together. He looked at the two doll-like children before him, and in an instant, everything clicked into place. Mo Fan took a closer look at the two little ones and saw that their delicate features were the spitting image of the President’s. His jaw dropped. My God! As the President’s personal assistant, how could he have been kept in the dark about something this huge? Li Mi sighed, looking to the heavens as she closed her eyes, feeling utterly resigned. She wished with all her might that this was just a dream. Zhanzhan hugged her leg tightly, afraid she’d get angry. “Mommy, please don’t be mad at us. We just really want a daddy,” the little boy said, his voice thick with emotion. “The other kids at kindergarten always tease us because our dad is never there for the parent-child days.” Duoduo looked miserable, her eyes welling up again. She was so conflicted. This daddy was so fierce. He’d raised a hand to Mommy. Did she really want him? Seeing his own words weren’t enough, Zhanzhan tugged on his sister’s little dress. “Duoduo, don’t you want a daddy anymore? Say something.” Duoduo thought for a moment, then turned and hugged Li Mi’s other leg, burying her tear-streaked face against her. Her pitiful expression melted away any anger Li Mi might have felt, replacing it with a pang of heartache and self-blame. It was her fault they didn’t have a complete family. Jing Ting’s mind flashed back to that tumultuous night seven years ago. She got pregnant? And she hid something this huge from him? Mo Fan struggled to pull himself together and called out softly, “President…” Jing Ting glanced toward the bamboo house, not forgetting the reason he’d come to the village in the first place. Who the hell had stolen the Blue Sky Project files? Shoving aside his personal turmoil, his gaze settled on the woman. “Who else lives here?” he asked, his voice laced with ice. “Zhanzhan! Who did you hack this time? Why is the tablet still on? It’s broadcasting your location! Aren’t you afraid that someone…” Wu Jun walked out of the bamboo house, tablet in hand. When he saw the scene in the courtyard, he froze. Why were there so many people? “Daddy! I’m the one who hacked your computer!” Zhanzhan ran to Wu Jun, snatched the tablet, and ran back. “It has nothing to do with Mommy! I did it, so I’ll face the consequences!” He held the tablet up high with his small hands, and Jing Ting reached out and took it. “Count me in, too,” Duoduo peeked out from behind her brother, looking up timidly at the towering man. “My brother and I… we hacked it together…” Li Mi felt a massive headache coming on. She took another deep breath. Jing Ting’s eyes darkened. He refused to believe two children were capable of this. “Daddy, I deleted the files that were stolen! I didn’t even look at them, I swear!” Zhanzhan looked at him earnestly. “I just wanted to meet you! I wanted you to know that my sister and I exist!”
