Rong Shu sat in Fu Jingting's car, the silence stretching between them for the entire journey. Soon, they arrived at the Fu family’s old residence. Old Mrs. Fu lived in the suburbs, a quiet woman who enjoyed her peace and often visited the temple to pray, attended only by a few maids. From a distance, Rong Shu could already hear the old woman’s cough. “Go wait by the door.” Old Mrs. Fu’s face was pale, her frailty apparent. She shot a cold look at Fu Jingting before leading Rong Shu into an inner room. “I was gone for such a short time, and I come back to this… Shu Shu, that was so impulsive of you.” Rong Shu knew she was talking about the divorce. She stepped forward and took the old woman's cool hand in hers, just as she always had. A faint smile touched her lips. “Old Mrs. Fu, you should be happy for me. I can finally be myself, can't I?” The old woman glanced resentfully at Fu Jingting outside the door, then turned back, her voice tinged with sorrow. “That foolish boy, Ah Ting… to lose a wife as good as you. And now you’re back to calling me something as formal as ‘Old Mrs. Fu.’” Rong Shu froze, a warmth flooding her eyes. “Grandmother.” Old Mrs. Fu gently patted the back of her hand. “Oh, Shu Shu. I've seen how you've felt about Jingting all these years. Can you truly let him go?” “I have no choice but to let go.” A bitter ache spread through Rong Shu’s chest. What else could she do? She had endured enough. The old woman pulled her into a hug, patting her back comfortingly. “I don't blame you for divorcing Jingting. I knew this day would come sooner or later. It's his loss; he wasn't fortunate enough to have you.” Rong Shu rested quietly in her embrace. In all her years with the Fu family, Old Mrs. Fu was the only one who had shown her any kindness. When she was around, even Wang Shuqin and Fu Jinglin had to restrain themselves. Rong Shu had long since come to see her as her own family. She didn't regret the divorce, only that she could no longer be by the old woman's side to care for her. “Shu'er, I've watched Jingting grow up, I know his nature. If one day, he tries to win you back… would you return?” Old Mrs. Fu still held out hope that they might one day reconcile. But Rong Shu was no fool. She knew the only person who could soften Fu Jingting’s heart was Gu Manyin. Not her. A humorless smile touched Rong Shu's lips. “But Grandmother, he doesn't love me. I should have understood that six years ago.” Realization seemed to dawn on Old Mrs. Fu, and she fell into a somber silence. “Grandmother, whether I'm your granddaughter-in-law or not, I will always be the Rong Shu who respects you.” She reached out to smooth a stray hair at the old woman’s temple and smiled. “You need to be happy and take care of your health. Don't worry about anything else.” Fu Jingting stood silently outside. He was well aware of the bond between Rong Shu and his grandmother. Though he had never liked Rong Shu, he couldn't deny that she had treated his grandmother exceptionally well—better, even, than her own children had. She had even looked after Wang Shuqin and Fu Jinglin, despite their cruelty toward her. When he learned that Rong Shu was responsible for Gu Manyin's car accident, a deep-seated revulsion had taken root in him. But seeing how genuinely she cared for his grandmother, he had chosen to let her go. He considered it his final act of tolerance. After a long while, the two women emerged from the room. “Shu'er, dear, you must come and visit an old woman like me when you have time. I'm afraid I don't have many years left.” “Don't say such things, Grandmother. You're going to live to be a hundred. I'll visit often, I promise.” At that moment, Fu Jingting stepped forward. “I'll drive you.” Rong Shu’s refusal was detached. “That won't be necessary. Someone is here for me.” She turned and walked toward a black Maybach that had already pulled up. Fu Jingting’s gaze darkened. It was Lu Qi and that male model. The warm scene of the three of them laughing and talking together was inexplicably jarring to his eyes. Old Mrs. Fu coughed, her breathing a little ragged. “I'm old. I can't meddle in your affairs anymore. But Ah Ting… I just hope you don't live to regret this one day.” The grandmother who had always doted on him was now utterly disappointed. Without another glance in his direction, she allowed her maids to help her back inside. Fu Jingting stood alone at the door, his expression impassive. Regret? Impossible.
