The smile on Gu Manyin’s face finally crumbled. She bowed her head as large tears began to fall, one after another.
A slight frown creased Fu Jingting’s brow, a clear sign of his displeasure with his grandmother. “Manyin meant well. She’s only concerned about your health. She’s the woman I love. If you’re angry with me, take it out on me, not her.”
The Old Madam's expression remained impassive, and she offered no reply.
Fu Jingting took Gu Manyin's hand and rose to his feet, but his words were directed at the Old Madam. “It’s getting late. You should get some rest, Grandmother. We won't disturb you any longer.”
They were gone in less than ten minutes.
Auntie Feng approached the Old Madam’s side and sighed. “Old Madam, why do you do this to yourself? It's not worth quarreling with Mr. Fu over an outsider.”
Stroking the jade bracelet on her wrist, the Old Madam murmured, “That Gu girl is no mere outsider. Jingting is willing to defy me for her sake.”
Auntie Feng gently tucked the blankets around her. “That can't be true. Mr. Fu has the utmost respect for you.”
The Old Madam merely smiled, saying nothing.
Unknown to all but a few veteran members of the Tiansheng board, Rong Shu had become the majority shareholder. Wielding her newfound authority, she decisively signed a contract with Cheng Huai.
Cheng Huai was a dark horse in the business world. While not yet as accomplished as Fu Jingting, he was a rising star with limitless potential.
With Li Chuan and Lu Qi by her side, everything was finally moving in the right direction.
But then, just as Lu Qi had feared, it happened.
The trending topics were flooded with clips of a blue Audi ramming into Gu Manyin. The comment sections below were a torrent of abuse, branding Rong Shu as insidious and vile.
Gu Manyin was painted as the bona fide victim, while Fu Jingting was portrayed as a man played for a fool by his manipulative ex-wife.
The tide of public opinion turned in an instant. If this continued, it wouldn't be long before the police came knocking.
It didn't take long for the Tiansheng board to call. They warned Rong Shu that the scandal was getting out of hand and, if not dealt with swiftly, could damage the company's bottom line.
Lu Qi scoffed. “A bunch of old foxes. Your shareholding is still private, so how could this possibly affect the company? They're just trying to scare you, to keep you under their thumb.”
Li Chuan’s gaze was fixed on the trending video, his brow furrowed. “Anyone with a trained eye can see the video is doctored. The problem is the sheer volume of outrage is blinding the public.”
The thought of Fu Jingting stooping so low as to release a fabricated video made Lu Qi sneer. “You really know how to pick 'em, don't you? How did you ever fall for such a black-hearted bastard? Honestly, he and that two-faced Gu Manyin are a match made in heaven. Neither of them is any good.”
Rong Shu watched the video, her face an emotionless mask, before slowly letting her eyelids fall.
Thinking his words had stung her, Lu Qi rubbed his nose, looking sheepish. “Ahem… Look, I wasn't trying to rub it in. I'm just glad you've seen the light. Good thing we were prepared and got our hands on the real footage from six years ago.”
Rong Shu lifted her head, her eyes meeting Li Chuan's concerned gaze. A faint smile touched her lips. “Fu Jingting was willing to divorce me for Gu Manyin. Is there anything he wouldn't do for her? I'm not surprised.”
Lu Qi’s eyes lit up. “Well, we have the real footage. Why don't we release it right now and clear your name? Let's make them eat their words!”
“Wait,” Rong Shu said, a different plan already forming. She arched an eyebrow at Lu Qi. “Tomorrow is the first of the month, isn't it? You mentioned the Gu family is throwing a party for Gu Manyin to celebrate her recovery?”
“Yeah. You're going to go?”
A smile played on her lips. “Not only am I going, but I'm also bringing them a very special gift.”
A look of understanding passed between Lu Qi and Li Chuan, and they broke into knowing smiles.
