All eyes were on her, hungry for a spectacle, but Rong Shu paid them no mind.
Her lips curved into a ghost of a smile as her gaze swept over Fu Jianting, still down on one knee. Only then did she turn to Mrs. Gu, her voice a lazy drawl as she spoke. “First, my apologies for arriving uninvited. Second, that video trending online… who’s to say it’s even real? And if you’re here to settle a score with me over what happened six years ago, then I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong person.”
As she finished, her gaze settled on Gu Manyin.
The color drained from Gu Manyin’s face, and she quickly ducked behind Fu Jianting.
Seeing this, the crowd began to murmur, their blame directed at Rong Shu.
“The nerve of this woman! Showing her face here after what she did six years ago?”
“Exactly. Look how she’s terrified Miss Gu. It’s just cruel.”
Seeing her precious daughter so frightened, Mrs. Gu had no patience for Rong Shu's games. “Quite the sharp tongue on you, young lady. If you’re so innocent, you can explain it to the police.”
Just as Mrs. Gu was about to make the call, Fu Jianting stopped her.
The man who had been silent for so long finally spoke. “Rong Shu, you shouldn’t be here.”
A threat?
A genuine smile now played on Rong Shu’s lips. She arched an eyebrow, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Then where should I be? After all, Mr. Fu, we were married for six years. And while you were never much of a husband to me, I can say with certainty I never did anything to wrong you. So why post a fabricated video online to slander me? Are you trying to leave me with no way out?”
Fu Jianting’s eyelid twitched, his grip on the velvet box tightening ever so slightly.
Assistant Zhang started to speak up for his boss, but Fu Jianting silenced him with a look.
His gaze was deep and heavy as he stared at her. “Gu Manyin won’t press charges. There’s no need for all this.”
Rong Shu laughed as if she’d just heard the world’s greatest joke. “Are you kidding me?”
She glanced around at all of them before leisurely settling into a nearby chair. “Li Chuan, why don’t you show everyone the 'grand gift' I brought for Miss Gu.”
And so, under the astonished gazes of everyone present, Li Chuan projected a video onto the large screen on the wall.
The scene that unfolded was entirely different from the one that had gone viral.
At that moment, Gu Yaotian spoke up, his expression flickering as his gaze turned grim. “Miss Rong, how can you prove this video is authentic? With today’s technology, anything can be faked.”
Rong Shu had anticipated this.
She gave Li Chuan a meaningful look.
He made a quick phone call, and soon, a man emerged from a car parked at the entrance.
Most people in the room recognized him: a renowned digital forensics expert in Haicheng.
His word carried more weight than anyone else’s.
“I can certify that Miss Rong’s video is completely authentic. The one circulating online, however, has been altered.”
The statement sent a ripple through the room. Everyone’s expression shifted, but none so dramatically as Fu Jianting’s.
His face darkened. “Rong Shu, are you done making a scene?”
Lu Qi, who had been watching with his arms crossed, let out a sneer. “I’ve got to say, Fu Jianting, it’s almost sad how easily you were played for a fool. Forget the video for a second. If you’d put even an ounce of effort into looking into the original police report from that accident, you would’ve known the truth years ago.”
Fu Jianting’s expression turned glacially cold. His eyes, devoid of any warmth, locked onto Gu Manyin. A dangerous, unseen storm was brewing within them.
Gu Manyin panicked.
She never imagined Rong Shu would come with actual proof.
She shook her head, her eyes wide with terror. “I… I didn’t lie to you, Jianting… I didn’t… Please, let me explain…”
But her explanations were utterly hollow now.
The truth was laid bare for all to see. Nothing she could say would matter.
Lu Qi couldn’t have been more satisfied. He scoffed, “And there’s something else you probably don’t know, Fu Jianting. For all the years Gu Manyin was in a coma, our dear Rong Shu was regularly going to the hospital to donate blood for her. If she’d hit her on purpose, why would she keep giving blood? She did it for *you*. It’s laughable. For a man who thinks he’s so damn smart, you’re utterly blind.”
