The Fu Residence—
Wang Shuqin was ordering the staff to purge the house of every trace of Rong Shu. The bedsheets she’d slept in, the slippers she’d worn, her apron—even the very chopsticks and bowls she had used—were all being thrown out.
“What are you doing?” Fu Jianting asked, his brow furrowing slightly as he walked in.
Wang Shuqin scoffed. “Why keep anything of that woman’s? Gu Manyin will be moving in soon enough.”
Her eyes darted slyly before she leaned in closer. “Jianting, you’ve divorced her, haven’t you? Let me tell you, you earned every cent of your money. Don’t you let her take a single dollar.”
“She didn’t ask for anything,” he said, his voice flat.
Wang Shuqin was clearly skeptical. “Impossible! She’s penniless. Why wouldn’t she try to squeeze you for everything she could? Where else would she get the money to keep that boy toy of hers?”
At the mention of Rong Shu and the male model, a vein throbbed in Fu Jianting’s temple. Done with the conversation, he simply ordered Assistant Zhang to bring his mother the divorce papers.
Upstairs, Gu Manyin was sitting by the window, reading a book.
She looked up and offered him a soft smile. “You’re back.”
Looking at her serene smile, the irritation simmering within him began to subside.
“Are you feeling any better?”
“I’m okay. It gets a little boring cooped up in here, so I found a book to pass the time.” Gu Manyin set the book gently on the nightstand, then rose and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind. “Jianting, do you regret divorcing her?”
“What is there to regret?” Fu Jianting’s voice was low. “I never loved her. Besides, she was the one who cheated first.”
A small, triumphant smile touched Gu Manyin’s lips.
The man turned and drew her into his arms. “Let’s not talk about her. Your health is what’s most important right now. Uncle Gu is throwing a banquet for you next month. You need to get well soon.”
Gu Manyin blinked and smiled. “I know.”
After Fu Jianting left, she dialed the Gu family’s butler.
“Miss, what are your orders?”
“Tell my father about Rong Shu hitting me with her car. You know how to frame it, don’t you?”
“Yes, Miss.”
After hanging up, Gu Manyin turned her gaze to a cactus on the windowsill, a slow, deliberate smile spreading across her face.
Back at his office, Fu Jianting summoned Assistant Zhang. “What’s the status of the ‘Heart of Azure’ I asked you to procure?”
Assistant Zhang replied respectfully, “Sir, we’ve heard back from the U.S. It should be arriving by air in about a week.”
The ‘Heart of Azure’ necklace was the masterwork of the internationally acclaimed designer K. It was one of a kind in the entire country, priceless. Assistant Zhang knew that Fu Jianting had gone to great lengths to acquire it, intending to propose to Miss Gu at the upcoming family banquet.
For some reason, Assistant Zhang’s thoughts drifted to the wife who had been by his boss’s side for six years.
His boss had never given her a single gift—not a priceless necklace, not even a flower.
He remembered the time Mrs. Fu had come to the office with a lunch box, only to be coldly dismissed by her husband. She’d become the laughingstock of the entire company that day. Everyone knew the boss held his wife in no regard. After that, she had tried to visit a few more times, but the receptionist always turned her away at the door.
Assistant Zhang sighed inwardly. The kindness his boss showed Miss Gu was a world away from the coldness he’d shown his wife.
The man merely grunted in acknowledgment, saying nothing more as he lowered his head to his documents.
Just then, his phone rang.
Fu Jianting glanced at the caller ID—it was a friend. He answered. “What is it?”
A young, flippant voice came through the line. “Jianting, you need to see the latest headline online.”
Unsure what mischief his friend was up to, Fu Jianting unlocked his phone. He scanned the screen idly, but his eyes suddenly froze.
It was a photo of Rong Shu and that male model, intimate. He was leaning down, she was tilting her head up, the angle making it look exactly like a kiss.
