Chapter 14: The Car Accident Six Years Ago
Author: Clarissa Dove
Oct 27, 2025
In his office, Fu Jingting drummed his index finger on the desk, a steady, rhythmic sound in the quiet room. He was waiting for something. About five minutes later, Assistant Zhang returned. “Sir, there were some complications, but I found it.” The man’s gaze lifted slowly. “What complications?” “The surveillance footage from Yingbin Road was overwritten years ago, and tracking down a six-year-old recording wasn't easy. Then a computer repairman approached me. He said the car crash six years ago was such a major incident that he’d saved a copy. When he heard I was looking for the video, he gave it to me.” Assistant Zhang finished his explanation and glanced cautiously at his boss. “The video shows Ms. Gu's car was, in fact, hit by another blue sedan. Would you like to see it?” Rong Shu had been driving a blue Audi that year. “No need.” Fu Jingting’s expression was unreadable. He gave his instructions. “Give it to me. And handle that man. Make sure he doesn’t go around talking.” “Understood.” Having worked for his boss for years, Assistant Zhang knew exactly what that meant. Fu Jingting had no intention of making this public, nor did he want his ex-wife to go to prison over it. Fu Jingting stared at the fountain pen in his hand, lost in thought. A moment later, he grabbed his jacket and returned to the Fu residence. As soon as he stepped into the foyer, he was met with the sound of cheerful laughter. Wang Shuqin and Gu Manyin were sharing a joke, the atmosphere warm and congenial. Even Fu Jinglin, usually the troublemaker, was sitting quietly to one side, absorbed in his phone. Wang Shuqin noticed him at the doorway and quickly rose to her feet. “Jingting, you’re back.” Gu Manyin stood up as well, her posture gentle and poised. Fu Jingting nodded, handing his jacket to a servant. “What were you all talking about? You seem to be having a good time.” Gu Manyin glanced at Wang Shuqin and smiled demurely. “Aunty was just telling me stories about you as a child. They’re quite amusing.” Wang Shuqin feigned a pout. “Gu Manyin, what’s this ‘Aunty’ business? You’re my future daughter-in-law. You should be calling me Mom by now.” A blush crept up Gu Manyin’s cheeks as she shyly glanced at the man. “It’s still too soon for that.” “We’re all family here, no need to be shy. Isn’t that right, Ting?” Wang Shuqin teased, nudging them together. Fu Jinglin chimed in right on cue, “Guess I can’t call you Sister Manyin anymore. I’ll have to switch to ‘sister-in-law’!” Gu Manyin’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. Fu Jingting sighed. “Mom, stop teasing Manyin. You know she gets embarrassed easily.” Wang Shuqin chuckled. “Look at you, so protective and she’s not even officially your wife yet. Alright, alright, I won’t disturb you two. I’m going to go chat with some old friends.” With a knowing grin and a suggestive wink, Fu Jinglin added tactfully, “Yeah, big brother, I won’t be a third wheel either.” After they left, the two were alone. Gu Manyin stepped closer and took his hand, her expression hesitant. “Jingting, my father keeps asking me about the car accident lately. Did you say something to him?” Fu Jingting shook his head. “Nothing.” “It seems like he knows Rong Shu was involved, but I never told him. It’s so strange.” She paused, then sighed. “I’ve already forgiven Ms. Rong. I don’t want to press the issue.” “You don’t hate her?” “Not anymore. She’s a pitiful woman, really. She must have loved you so much to do something so desperate.” Gu Manyin’s words were the picture of magnanimity, a disarmingly sweet performance designed to put him at ease. Fu Jingting stroked her hair, his gaze deep. “Manyin, you’ve always been so kind. You were the same way back in university. I still remember you mentioned in a letter once how you rescued a little mouse as a child and kept it on your bed. Your father nearly had a fit over it.” A smile touched his lips at the memory. “Amusing.” Gu Manyin’s smile froze for a second before she quickly composed herself. “Why bring up the past? That’s all just embarrassing history. By the way, I heard from Little Lin that the Old Madam hasn't been feeling well lately. I'd like to go and visit her.” Recalling his grandmother’s coldness toward him, Fu Jingting considered for a moment. “I’ll take you tomorrow.” “Okay.” Only after he had gone upstairs did Gu Manyin pull out her phone and dial a number. “How did it go?” “Miss, it’s done. What’s the next step?” “The day before the banquet, I want to see this trending.” “Understood.”
