Meanwhile, Yan Luo rolled out of bed with a violent sneeze. *Someone must be talking about me,* she thought.
The moment she stepped out of her dilapidated residential community, her stepmother, Li Guifang, accosted her. "Yan Luo, where the hell were you last night? Rolling in at this hour?"
Yan Luo ignored her and tried to walk past.
"You stop right there," Li Guifang snapped. "I've arranged a match for you tomorrow. It's Mr. Li's son—the one whose family runs that little store by the school. You'll go to their house for dinner, and if things go well, you'll get married."
Yan Luo scoffed. "If I recall, Mr. Li's son is the village idiot, isn't he? How much did they pay you?"
"What are you talking about? I'm doing this for your own good!" Li Guifang retorted. "The Lis are one of the wealthiest families in town. You think you're too good for them?"
"If you think he's such a great catch, you marry him!"
With that, Yan Luo was out the door.
Li Guifang’s face contorted with rage, but she was powerless. The wretched girl had been missing for three whole years, and since her return, she'd become completely ungovernable. When Li Guifang's husband had tried to discipline her, she had simply fought back and overpowered him.
*That little monster!* she fumed. She would get Yan Luo to the Li household tomorrow, even if she had to drug her to do it.
Leaving the crumbling house behind, Yan Luo headed straight for the town's internet cafe.
She paid for a full day on a computer, bought a bottle of water, and settled into a seat in a quiet corner.
The screen flashed with the vibrant graphics of her game as her slender fingers flew across the keyboard. The morning slipped by in a blur until a voice from behind her broke her concentration. It was the cafe manager.
"Yan Luo, someone's here to see you."
*Who could that be?*
Yan Luo stretched, realizing it was lunchtime anyway. She ambled carelessly out of the internet cafe and saw a man in a black suit standing by the entrance. He looked to be in his forties or fifties. Their eyes met, and he spoke first. "You're Yan Luo?"
Yan Luo nodded. She didn't recognize him. Before she could say anything, the man’s voice sharpened with anger. "Yan Luo, you just turned eighteen. You should be in school, not wasting your life away in some grimy internet cafe! Is this how a young woman is supposed to act?"
"Who are you?" What was this guy's problem?
"I am your biological father, Yan Anxing. You got lost at an amusement park when you were two years old. We've been searching for years, and a private investigator finally found you just a few days ago. Come with me to A City. Your mother and your brother are waiting for you at home."
Yan Anxing's expression soured. He couldn't believe this was the daughter he had been so overjoyed to find. A brawling, truant dropout who now wasted her days in an internet cafe.
If he could, Yan Anxing would rather she had never been found at all.
"You must have the wrong person."
Her biological parents? The idea was laughable to Yan Luo.
Yan Anxing almost wished he did. He sighed. "There's no mistake. You were sold to a family here by human traffickers after you went missing. You have a red birthmark on the bottom of your foot. I really am your father."
She did have a birthmark there. Even so, Yan Luo's voice was cold. "I'm not going. You should leave."
She didn't need any biological parents.
Yan Anxing's face darkened. "Our family, the Yans, we're prominent and wealthy. Anywhere with us is better than this miserable town you're living in. Do you plan to rot away in this backwater for the rest of your life? Yan Luo, you're coming back with me today, whether you like it or not."
"What are you going to do? Kidnap me?"
"Yan Luo! You are a daughter of the Yan family, and you will return to A City with me. That is final."
