At his words, a flicker of something passed through Yan Luo’s eyes. Just then, her phone buzzed in her purse with a new message.
“Yan Luo. New assignment from the boss. You're to go to Kaidis and protect his younger brother, Xu Xiaoshaoye, until he graduates from university.”
Yan Luo’s brow furrowed. *What a lousy assignment.*
*Kaidis is in A City, if I remember correctly.*
She glanced at Yan Anxing and sighed. “Fine. Let’s go.”
Yan Anxing froze, startled by her sudden change of heart. Still, it saved him a great deal of trouble.
As the black Maybach pulled away from the town, word of Yan Luo’s departure in a luxury car quickly reached the ears of Li Guifang.
…
Yunxi Town was in a remote area, and it was already evening by the time Yan Luo and Yan Anxing arrived at the Yan family residence.
An elegantly dressed woman and a teenage girl were waiting for them at the door.
“You must be Yan Luo?” the woman, Su Yuan, asked, her voice gentle. The moment she saw how much the girl’s face resembled her own, her eyes began to well up.
Before Yan Luo could react, Su Yuan pulled her into a hug. Unaccustomed to such physical contact, Yan Luo went rigid in her arms.
“I’m your mother. You’ve suffered so much all these years. It’s all my fault… I’m the one who lost you.”
“Don’t… don’t cry,” Yan Luo managed, feeling completely out of her depth.
“Alright, I won’t cry. I’m just so happy to have you back, Luo Luo.” Su Yuan let go of Yan Luo, wiping at her eyes before gesturing to the girl in the princess dress standing beside her. “This is our adopted daughter, Yan Shuran.”
“Hello, Sister,” Yan Shuran said sweetly. “Mom and I have been waiting for you for so long. From now on, we’ll be the best of sisters!”
Yan Luo offered a cool nod, instantly seeing through the girl’s facade to the dislike simmering beneath.
Yan Shuran bristled at her cold reception.
For years, everyone had believed she was the true heiress of the Yan family. She had grown up coddled by her parents and brothers, living a life of utter privilege. But now, after all this time, the *real* daughter had been found. How could Yan Shuran possibly be happy about that?
She had expected some country bumpkin, plain and tacky, but Yan Luo…
Yan Luo was the spitting image of Su Yuan. Her complexion was fair and flawless, her delicate features so exquisitely carved they seemed sculpted by a divine hand. She was perfect, beyond reproach—like a celestial fairy fallen to earth.
Yan Anxing’s expression remained grim. *So this is the girl,* he thought. *Home for five minutes and she hasn’t addressed anyone properly. No manners at all.* He spoke in a low voice, “Where are the other three?”
At the mention of them, Su Yuan’s expression turned awkward as she recalled the messages she’d received from her three other sons.
“Mom, I have a late meeting at the office. Can’t make it.”
“Mom, I’ve got surgery tonight. I won’t be back.”
“Mom, my professor won’t excuse me from class.”
She had explicitly told them all to be home for dinner to welcome Yan Luo, but all three had found an excuse. It was painfully obvious how little they cared about meeting their long-lost sister.
Su Yuan sighed, turning back to Yan Luo. “Luo Luo, you have three older brothers. They all had something come up today, but I’ll introduce you to them another time.”
Uninterested in meeting any brothers, Yan Luo merely said, her tone flat, “Then let’s eat. It’s getting late.”
As they sat around the dining table, Su Yuan, anxious that Yan Luo might go hungry, kept piling food onto her plate. “Luo Luo, see if you like the food. If there’s anything you don’t care for, I can have our cook make something else.”
“It’s fine,” Yan Luo replied, her voice soft.
She could see that Su Yuan genuinely cared for her, but having never known a family, Yan Luo had no idea how to respond.
