Chapter 14: Do you think Cheng Junyu can fall for you?
Author: Gwendolyn
Oct 27, 2025
Sensing his anger, I whispered goodbye to Muzi and walked meekly to his side. With my head bowed, I mumbled, "Thank you." He shot me a cold glance, his dark eyes deep and unreadable. "Get in," he commanded, his voice flat. I didn't dare say another word and quickly got into the car. We were well into the drive when I received a text from Muzi saying she'd made it home. I replied, telling her to get some rest, and then turned to the scenery passing outside the window. We were almost at the villa. I stole a glance at the man beside me, as icy and distant as ever. I knew better than to speak unless he spoke first. It wasn't until he pulled the car to a stop in the driveway that the silence was broken. He strode into the villa, and I hurried after him. "Fu Shenyan," I began, feeling the need to explain. "I only called Dr. Cheng because I thought you were drunk. I didn't have any other intentions." The explanation felt pointless, but I had to say it, even though I knew he wouldn't care. He stopped in his tracks and turned to face me. His dark eyes narrowed, his voice low. "Other intentions? You think a man like Cheng Junyu would even look at you?" His words struck me dumb. I couldn't utter a single word in response. He was right. Putting aside the fact that Cheng Junyu was Fu Shenyan’s friend and I was his wife in name only, a man like that would never be interested in me anyway. To Fu Shenyan, I was nothing but dust beneath his feet. If Old Master Fu hadn't taken a liking to me, I wouldn't have even been worthy of meeting Fu Shenyan, let alone marrying him. Seeing I had nothing to say, Fu Shenyan gave me another cold look and started up the stairs. He only made it a few steps before he stopped, as if remembering something. He looked back down at me. "Go to Guanghan Nanji and buy me a late-night supper." I froze. Why hadn't he said so on the way home? This place and Guanghan Nanji were on complete opposite sides of the city. Besides, it was already past midnight. He wanted me to drive halfway across the city to get him a snack? "Does it have to be tonight? It's already past midnight, they might be closed." "It's open 24 hours." He tossed the words at me without another glance and continued up the stairs, leaving no room for argument. He didn't actually want a late-night supper. He just wanted to torment me. But, in the end, I was the one in the wrong. After a moment's hesitation, I left the villa and went to get a car. It was the middle of the rainy season, and the air was hot and oppressively humid, a sure sign a storm was coming. I had intended to take Fu Shenyan's Jeep, but he had taken the keys with him to his study. I had no choice but to take a sedan with lower clearance from the garage. At one in the morning, after driving across half the city, I finally had the supper. For a moment, I even felt lucky that the rain had held off. But the moment I stepped out of Guanghan Nanji, the sky broke open. Thunder cracked, lightning flashed, and the rain came down in a torrential sheet. I started the long drive back. During Jiangcheng's rainy season, many tunnels and low-lying roads were prone to flooding, so I deliberately took a detour to avoid them. The route was longer, but it was safer. For all my planning, however, I never expected the car to break down. Because of the detour and my cautious speed, I was still a long way from the villa. The area was deserted, and in the pouring rain, there was no chance of hailing a cab. I checked my phone—the battery was nearly dead. Left with no other choice, I called Fu Shenyan. The phone rang several times, but he didn't pick up. Just as the screen was about to go black, I found an umbrella in the car, grabbed the supper, and stepped out onto the road to begin the long walk home.
