Chapter 8: Taking care of Lu Xinran

Xu Hui scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "She’s nothing but an ungrateful viper. All those years of Dad's effort, completely wasted." "That's enough!" Fu Changheng shot her a glare, then turned to me with a look of resignation. "It's getting late. Your grandfather is at peace now. You should head home." "Okay. Thank you, Uncle." Fu Changheng and Xu Hui were both in their fifties and childless. They held shares in the Fu Corporation and led a relatively quiet life. Despite Xu Hui's venomous tongue, she wasn't a bad person at heart, and the two of them had built a life together that many would envy. I watched them walk away, my gaze lingering on my grandfather's headstone, my mind drifting. With him gone, I feared that whatever bond held Fu Shenyan and me together was finally broken. The wind stills, the rain dries, the sun sets. And eventually, I would lose him. "Rest well, Grandpa. I'll come back to see you soon." I bowed deeply before the headstone. As I turned to leave, I froze. When had Fu Shenyan gotten here? He stood a short distance behind me, a tall, lean figure dressed entirely in black. His expression was grim, his dark, bottomless eyes fixed on our grandfather’s headstone, revealing nothing. When he saw me turn, he pulled his gaze away. "Let's go," he said, his voice low and contained. Was he… here to pick me up? He started to turn, and I rushed to stop him. "Fu Shenyan, Grandpa's gone. You need to let this go. You know how much he sacrificed for you over the years…" The coldness in his eyes intensified as he stared at me, and the words died in my throat. I was suddenly at a loss. I had expected an explosion of anger, but instead, he turned and walked away without another word. By the time I followed him out of the cemetery, dusk had settled. The driver who was supposed to pick me up had already left, presumably after seeing Fu Shenyan arrive. I had no choice but to ride back with him. Once we were in the car, he started the engine, and we drove in a heavy silence. I twisted my fingers in my lap, the question about Lu Xinran on the tip of my tongue. But every time I glanced at his grim profile, I swallowed it back down. Finally, I couldn't take it anymore. "How is Ms. Lu?" I hadn't pushed her, but she had fallen right in front of me. The tires screeched as the car jerked to a sudden stop. I was thrown forward by the momentum, but before I could react, a firm hand pressed me back into my seat. Fu Shenyan was leaning over me, his body partially pinning me in place. His dark eyes bored into mine, sharp and cold. A sense of danger washed over me, and I shrank back in my seat. "Fu Shenyan..." I began. "What is it you're hoping for?" he asked, his voice laced with an icy sarcasm. "Shen Shu, did you really think that just because Grandfather gave you that box, I would call off the divorce?" My heart sank. Of course he knew. It had only been a few hours, but nothing ever got past him. "I didn't push her." I suppressed the bitterness rising in my throat and met his gaze, a humorless laugh bubbling up inside me. "Fu Shenyan, I have no idea what's in the box Grandfather gave me, and I never planned on using it to hold our marriage together. Since you're so desperate for a divorce, fine. I agree. We can go file the papers tomorrow." The sky outside had grown completely dark. The wind howled, and a light rain began to tap against the windows, deepening the oppressive, cold silence inside the car. My sudden agreement seemed to catch him off guard, but only for a second. A cold smirk played on his lips. "Xinran is still lying in a hospital bed. You think you can agree to a divorce now and just walk away from it all?" "What do you want from me?" Of course. The woman he loved was in the hospital because of me; he wasn't about to let me off the hook that easily. "Starting tomorrow, you're going to take care of her." He straightened up, his long fingers gripping the steering wheel. His gaze turned distant, unreadable.
