Chapter 15: He Knows I'm Pregnant
Author: Gwendolyn

With any luck, I’d run into a kind driver. The wind howled and the rain lashed down, and the flimsy little umbrella I had was next to useless. I hadn’t gone far before I was soaked to the bone. Perhaps my luck was just that bad. I walked for what felt like an eternity without a single car passing by. A deep chill settled into my bones, and a dull ache began to throb in my lower abdomen. After just a few more steps, I couldn't go on. The ache sharpened into a stabbing pain, like a thousand needles. Fearing for the baby, I had no choice but to stop. I clutched my stomach and crouched down on the ground. As the rain intensified, I fumbled in my pocket for my phone, only to find it gone. I must have left it in the car when I got out. I’d already come a long way; the pain in my abdomen was too severe for me to even think about going back. I managed a few steps, leaning on a stone bollard at the roadside for support, but a wave of cold sweat washed over me, forcing me back into a crouch. Then I felt a faint, warm trickle run down my inner thigh. My heart seized. The baby… I was going to lose the baby… There’s an old nursery rhyme that says little girls are made of sugar and spice, and all things nice, not so different from angels. But not all girls are made of sugar and spice and all things nice. Some are born to face disaster, suffering, torment, the pain of separation, and the agony of unfulfilled desires. *Screeeech…* By the time I heard the sound of a car braking, a wave of dizziness had washed over me, and I could barely keep my eyes open. I hazily lifted my head. A black Jeep. License plate: Jiang ACL999. Fu Shenyan. The name flashed through my mind. I knew it was him. The recognition gave me a final burst of strength, and I pushed myself to my feet. But I'd been crouching for too long, and with the dizziness already overwhelming me, the world tilted violently as I pitched backward. “Foolish woman!” A man’s deep, cold voice cut through the haze. I tried to open my eyes, again and again, but I didn't have the strength. The last flicker of awareness told me that Fu Shenyan was lifting me into his car, and then everything went black. When I woke again, the world was a hazy, white blur. It took a moment for my vision to clear and for me to realize I was in a hospital. I tried to move, and a sharp, exceptional pain shot through me. A primal instinct took over, and my hand flew to my lower abdomen. “Don’t worry, the baby’s fine.” The sudden voice made me jump. I turned my head and saw Cheng Junyu. I stared, stunned, unsure of what to say. After a moment, I managed to croak, “You…” I tried to ask what he was doing here, but the words caught in my raw throat. Seeing my struggle, he raised an eyebrow, turned to pour a glass of water, and walked back to my side. He moved to help me sit up, half-lifting me into his arms. I recoiled, trying to prop myself up on my elbows to create some distance between us. He simply ignored me, bringing the glass to my lips. I reached for it myself, but he deftly moved it out of my grasp. “Just drink.” At that, I couldn't argue. A few sips soothed my throat enough to speak. He gently laid me back down on the bed and set the water aside. I looked at him and said, “Thank you.” He just hummed in acknowledgement, his eyes fixed on the phone he was idly turning over in his hands. I hesitated for a moment before finally asking, “Did Fu Shenyan find out about the baby?” If my eyes hadn’t deceived me, it was Fu Shenyan who brought me here last night. If Cheng Junyu knew, then he must know too. His fingers stilled. His dark eyes rose from the phone and settled on me, narrowing slightly. “You didn’t want him to know?”
