Chapter 19: Agreeing to a Divorce
Author: Gwendolyn
Oct 27, 2025
Han Shuang, who had worked for me for two years, knew more than her fair share about my affairs with Fu Shenyan. At my words, her brow furrowed. “If you really agree to the divorce, won’t you be letting down Grandpa Fu’s trust in you?” “What’s more, if you sign this now, all the company shares Grandpa Fu transferred to you will revert to President Fu. Director, you’ll be losing out! It’s not worth it!” Sensing her concern, I glanced at the time; it was already getting late. Instead of offering a lengthy explanation, I simply said, “I have my reasons. Please, just go get it for me. I have to head out in a bit.” Seeing that I was resolved, Han Shuang stormed out of the office in a frustrated huff. I quickly tidied up, found my car keys, and waited for her by the stairwell. Thankfully, she was fast, returning in just a moment with what I needed. She handed me the file folder, still unable to let it go. “Director, now is not the right time to be signing divorce papers. You…” “That’s enough!” I cut her off as I stepped into the elevator. Looking back at her, I said, “Just focus on your work. I know what I’m doing.” She looked like she wanted to say more, but the elevator doors slid shut. Down in the garage, I started the car and drove straight to my meeting with Cheng Junyu. Nanwan Xiaozhu was an elegant Chinese restaurant, its decor a tasteful and classic style. The dishes were delicate and refined, and its high prices ensured a quiet, exclusive atmosphere frequented by the city's elite. I had a reservation, so I was shown directly to my table upon entering. To my surprise, Cheng Junyu was already there. He sat by the window, impeccably dressed in casual clothes, exuding an air of distinction. His long fingers drummed a light, intermittent rhythm on the tabletop, the very picture of leisure. “Sorry I’m late,” I said, settling into the seat across from him and flagging down a waiter. He’d been lost in thought, gazing out the window, but turned at the sound of my arrival. When he saw me, a handsome brow arched, and a playful smile spread across his face. “When a beautiful woman is buying? I wouldn’t dare be late.” It was rare to see him smile like that. I pushed the menu toward him, smiling back. “Has anyone ever told you that when you smile, you look remarkably gentle and… pure?” He raised an eyebrow. Instead of taking the menu, he gestured for me to order. His almond-shaped eyes narrowed slightly as he met my gaze. “You’re the first.” I chuckled and didn't argue, simply ordering a few dishes and trying my best to pick things he might like. After handing the menu back to the waiter, I took a small sip of water. I noticed he was just watching me with a faint smile, not saying a word. I paused, setting my glass down. “Is there something on my face?” I asked, confused. The corners of his mouth lifted; he was clearly in a good mood. “First time having a meal with my brother’s woman. It feels…” He paused, the smile in his eyes deepening. “…it feels pretty good, actually.” They say birds of a feather flock together. A man as cold and detached as Fu Shenyan naturally wouldn’t surround himself with easy company. I didn't overthink his comment or try to dissect its meaning. Instead, I looked at him and got straight to the point. “If I needed a favor from you, Dr. Cheng, would you help me?” He arched an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. “What kind of favor?” “Herbal medicine. For a woman to recover after a miscarriage.” His brow furrowed. “That’s it?” I nodded. “I’ve long heard that you’re a genius in traditional Chinese medicine, Dr. Cheng. I was hoping you could prescribe something to help a woman recover from a miscarriage. Is that a favor you’d be willing to grant?”
